How to choose a portable air conditioner

Marketing BTU numbers are inflated. Here is what actually determines whether a unit will cool your room.

1. SACC, not ASHRAE BTU

The big number on the box (ASHRAE) overstates real cooling. The SACC/DOE figure is the honest one — a “14,000 BTU” unit is usually 10,000–12,000 SACC. Match SACC to your room size, not the headline number.

2. Single hose vs. dual hose

Single-hose units exhaust indoor air and pull warm air back in through gaps. Dual-hose (and hose-in-hose) designs cool faster and hold temperature better — worth the premium for rooms over 400 sq. ft.

3. Noise level

Compressors make noise; anything under 50 dB on low is livable, and inverter models reach 39–42 dB. For light sleepers, cool the room before bed and run fan-only overnight.

4. Drainage

Self-evaporating models rarely need draining in dry climates. In humid regions, check for a continuous drain option — otherwise you’ll empty the tank every few days.

Frequently asked questions

What size portable AC do I need?

Allow roughly 20 BTU (SACC) per square foot. A 300 sq. ft. bedroom needs about 6,000–8,000 SACC; a 500 sq. ft. living room wants 10,000+. Sunny rooms and top floors should size up.

Do portable ACs need to vent through a window?

Yes — every unit on this list vents hot air through a window kit (included). Sliding door and drop-ceiling kits are available separately if your windows don’t fit the standard bracket.

What does the score out of 10 mean?

Our score blends verified owner ratings, review volume, true cooling performance (SACC), noise, efficiency and value. A 9.0+ product is one we’d buy with our own money.
